Consistent golf begins with constant thought

The Mental Game

Attitude and strategies in any human endeavor can make the difference between success and failure, or enjoyment and dread. Golf is no different. Unlike many other sports whose nature is more reflexive, golf is a game where the ball just sits there waiting, leaving the golfer with a lot of time to think or perhaps over think. The strategies we use in dealing with this time, starting with basic attitude can make all the difference in how we will perform, learn and enjoy the game.

Turning endless mind chatter off may be a life long pursuit, but turning it down when playing golf is possible by trying stay in the moment or being present minded. Playing each shot as they happen is much more productive than worrying about the upcoming imagined disaster or past failures.

Begin by being more focused on the target, rather than on how the body will move. A small specific target is recommended. An image of what you would like the ball to do is also helpful. This sounds obvious, but this detail is often left out of the golfer’s preparation for the upcoming shot. Instead, the image of the upcoming imagined disaster is most vivid and is more likely created as a result. The image of the desired result is a big part of the puzzle, in the creation of any golf shot.

Including these two strategies in your shot making routine is a good start, in developing a consistent mental approach.
